Less snow and ice get stuck to your wipers if it snows, and it makes it easier to clean your windshield when it snows.

You'll think it's even more stupid when your wipers are frozen stuck and it's raining or something.

To prevent the wipers from sticking to the windshield when its cold. It may look stupid, but it's actually quite usefull, I've destroyed a bunch of them by forgetting to lift the wipers and lifting them afterwards.

I don't get it either. IF there is ice on your car use your ice scraper to get the wiper of the window then slap it on the windshield. Takes .5 seconds and you're done. Also serves the benefit of your car not looking like it has antennas.

So you've never had your wipers frozen to your windshield?

You haven't experienced a real winter. I do it all the time whenever we have cold snaps and very low wind chill/expected ice. It's not stupid at all.

Thank you. I've always wanted to photograph this on the way through my parking lot but don't want to give them any publicity.

Best thing is they're not facing any Nor'easters. Or any freezing rain spells. Oftentimes I'll walk out of work and there wasn't any precipitation.

Unless your vehicle won't allow you to put them up (aka my '06 Silverado) in which case the rage become unbearable. I also like putting them up when I clean my windows at the gas station....unless your truck is dumb and IT. WON'T. LET. YOU...

Well that is remarkably stupid. How do you replace the wipers then if they don't raise up?

Kinja'd!!!5

When the ice crystals attaching the rubber to the windshield separates, it causes little tears in the rubber, shortening the life of your wipers. Looks stupid but keeps things nicer longer. Also it keeps them from over icing during the freeze and thaw period of the daytime if you are parked for longer than 24 hours.

I do this all the time. I'm going to guess you're in coastal VA, where the snowfall totals are a bit lower. Up here in Boston, this is a lifesaver when you're getting rain / sleet / snow / freezing rain / hail in a four hour period.

On my wife's Golf, if you turn the ignition on and back off without starting the car, then turn the wipers on, they'll go to the end of their travel and stop to let you lift them up.

Took me a while to figure that one out.

Sometimes, yes. We get slush/sleet/anything out of the sky and it can rain on the slush then freeze. Boston is often on a rain/snow/changeover line when it gets warm enough to snow.

Would your vehicle not allow you to turn on the wipers and then turn off the ignition leaving the wiper arm half way through it's cycle and free to be lifted away from the windscreen (you do need to remember to put down your wiper arms before turning on the ignition.

Well I've lived in WNY for 20 years, and I've had my wipers frozen to my windshield a few times every winter.

Usually because I forget to lift my wipers up.

01/06/2015 at 13:55

Kinja'd!!!1

WNY you guys like I don't know how you live though your winters, I assumed you would do this just to be able to find your car!

But this is dc, no more snow called for and there was 3 inches, MAYBE, that fell. It seems stupid and a waste of time to do here.

Winters are easy enough in Niagara County. Pretty much anywhere north of Buffalo.

That 8ft of snow last year? During that time, my home and place of work got less than an inch of snowfall.

Lake Effect snow is real funny like that.

It's not that common, but around here you can never really tell what's going to be on your windshield until it's all frozen in place. A good layer of ice two or three times a winter. Freezing sleet same, rain to snow happens often, snow to rain also happens often. Then some winters it's nice and cold and we just get snow after snow after snow. But better safe than sorry, lift those wipers if winter precipitation is in the forecast!

Reach over (hell of a reach) and slide the clip off/on whilst on my tippytoes. I do have about 4" of clearance away from my windshield, but that helps me none whatsoever except to slam the ice off of my wipers in the morning...

Kinja'd!!! 1.21 JIGGA WATTS!!! > Svend

Never tried it. It looks like the wiper arm is stopped by a protrusion that doesn't allow me to. Can't hurt to try it later though...

When I'm apply a glass sealant I need full access to the glass and often this is the only way to do in.

Kinja'd!!!

With the arm half way through it's cycle it frees up the arm from the rear of the bonnet/hood.

I got that 8 ft. Made for awesome pictures and memories, but was otherwise hellish! Also, (although I'm a WNY Native - mainly the southtowns) the year before I was in sunny S.C. And I had only moved back here one month before that storm. Talk about a warm welcome.

Ha, you're lucky then. Last Saturday, in mid-MI, it rained in the middle of the day. At around 10pm, I realized the temp was gonna be at 5 Sunday morning. I went out to the car to run it for 10 minutes (it hates starting in the cold), all four doors were frozen shut, the wipers had ice all across them, and a day later I found out the nozzles for the washer fluid had ice on it. I still have ice of the roof of my car, since I can't reach it all.

Damn that blows, but makes sense. I had friends who didn't want to come out because of the crazy ice we we're supposed to get. But when I drove at 1am it was still like 36 degrees around Detroit. That drive would of sucked if it all froze.

Hmm. I think I mispoke when I said it gets frozen to the windshield. It does, sort of, though. Rain falls on the windshield, which goes on the wiper, then gets frozen. So it's like a clump of ice on the wiper. You can still use the wiper, it just won't clean your windshield anymore, rendering it useless.

Depends on the situation. If you are driving to work and its snowing, you have the heat on. Your car is warm. After parking the snow that hits your car will melt. As the car sits and cools soon that melting snow turns to slush and then later into a 1" ice. Often if the wiper is left up very little ice accumulates.
